The main law library contains approximately 37,000 volumes and the Santa Maria branch contains approximately 14,000 volumes. Though the Santa Barbara County Law Library is small in comparison to its neighbors, the Ventura County Law Library and the Los Angeles County Law Library, it contains most of the major legal treatises required for California and Federal legal research. Just a few of the major titles held by the law library include:
- CEB Series (Continuing Education of the Bar)
- Rutter Group Civil Practice Series
- Cal Jur 3rd
- California Legal Forms: Transaction Guide
- California Forms of Pleading and Practice
- California Points and Authorities
- Witkin's Summary of California Law
- Witkin's California Criminal Law
- Witkin's California Evidence
- Witkin's California Procedure
- California Civil Practice Series
The law library also holds several federal titles. A few include:
- Moore's Federal Practice
- LEXIS Immigration Law and Practice
- Collier on Bankruptcy
- Federal Reporter, 1st - 3rd series
- Federal Supplement
- Supreme Court Reporter
Finally, the law library also has access to the regional reporters for all sections of the United States, either in hard copy or via www.lexisone.com. Again, it must be emphasized that this represents just a few of the many titles held by the Santa Barbara County Law Library.
The law library if firmly committed to implementing new legal technologies. Currently, the library offers CD-ROM terminals. From these terminals the public can access many electronic databases such as Matthew Bender treatises. The public can access the Internet via a Cox Cable connection.
Santa Barbara County attorneys only may request legal materials from the Los Angeles County Law Library via interlibrary loan. On average, it takes approximately one week for requested materials to arrive. Please note that there is a processing fee depending upon the item(s) requested.
Please see the staff at the circulation desk for more information regarding interlibrary loan procedures.
Most law library items may circulate for twentyfour hours, to Santa Barbara County attorneys only. However, the Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) materials, the Rutter Group Civil Practice Series, and a few other volumes circulate for only 1 hour. They may be kept overnight if checked out in the last hour before closing and returned at opening.
The law library offers three photocopying machines. Two machines are located on the main floor next to the elevator. The third machine is located on the upper floor. It costs 15 cents per copy. Alternatively, you may purchase a photocopy card for either $5.00 or $20.00 at the circulation desk.
